We are drawn to Type Fives because they have a depth of knowledge and willingly share their understandings with others for everyone’s betterment. At their best, they are visionary, analytical, objective, curious, perceptive, and wise.
The Type Five structure is comprised of an underlying desire to understand in order to be capable and competent. This desire is coupled with an underlying fear of being useless, incompetent, or depleted. Fives' focus of attention is drawn towards managing their inner resources & so instinctively they notice when someone or something threatens to deplete their energy. They put attention on limiting unexpected intrusions or threats to their privacy & inner resources.
Fives are naturally concerned with:
Limiting their dependency on others
Avoiding intrusions
Gaining knowledge
Conserving time, energy & feelings
If you are trying to discern whether or not you lead with Type Five, consider if these "I" statements resonate with you from the perspective of an Enneagram Five:
I deeply appreciate the accumulation of information & the pursuit of knowledge
I sometimes get so focused on my work that I'm unaware of how much time has passed by
The life of the mind & my interior world have always felt like the most exciting part of life
I don't like to be dependent on others for what I need or want
Sometimes others are overwhelmed by my curiosity & desire to understand
Sometimes I choose not to discuss what I'm interested in because I don't know if they'd appreciate or understand it
Others tend to come to me when they need to know something because I have a wide base of knowledge to pull from
As a Narrative Enneagram Practitioner, I believe that the best way to learn about the 9 Types is to experience them. Learn more about Type Five in my podcast episodes linked below:
